A “Lockdown” of Materialism Values and Pro-Environmental Behavior: Short-Term Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic led to serious restrictions on peoples’ everyday lives and had severe economic impacts. In contrast, “lockdown” short-term beneficial effects for the environment. present study, we compared pro-environmental behavior materialism values before, during, after lockdown in spring of 2020. results an online study using 370 participants showed a decrease sacrificing actions. ecologically compatible actions decreased during increased again initial level were loosened. Moreover, attitudes diminishing effect values, especially restrictions. Agreeableness lockdown. trait narcissism enhanced which strongest was over. conclusion, behaviors “locked down” due but did not show expected rebound effects. Practical theoretical implications are discussed.
